On August 10, 2023, nearly 30 leaders and key team members participated in Leaders’ Talk #5, a leadership development session themed “Leading Through Understanding Purpose and Motivation.” The session was facilitated by David Lapetina, Engineering Director at Kyanon Digital.
During the talk, David introduced the 5P Framework, Proposition, Productivity, Profitability, People, and Purpose, to highlight the critical role of purpose in leadership. He explored how an individual’s sense of purpose directly influences intrinsic motivation and shapes performance, engagement, and personal growth within an organization.
The session focused on four key topics:
- Understanding purpose, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation
- Why leaders should understand both their own purpose and that of their team members
- Practical ways to identify purpose effectively
- Aligning individual purpose with organizational goals
What motivates our actions?
According to David, purpose is “a clear and meaningful reason that explains why an individual or organization takes action.”
Every decision and action is influenced by two primary types of motivation:
Intrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation comes from within and is driven by factors such as personal values, passion, fulfillment, and a sense of achievement.
Extrinsic motivation
Extrinsic motivation is influenced by external factors, including rewards, recognition, compensation, promotions, and other incentives.
While extrinsic motivators often change based on life circumstances, career stages, or external conditions, intrinsic motivation tends to be more stable because it is closely connected to an individual’s deeper sense of purpose.
For this reason, purpose and intrinsic motivation often become the most sustainable drivers of long-term engagement and performance.
Why is it important to understand your own purpose and that of your team?
Understanding what motivates people at work significantly improves job satisfaction, engagement, and commitment.
When individuals can connect their personal aspirations to organizational goals, they develop a stronger sense of belonging and ownership. This alignment not only benefits the organization but also supports individual growth and well-being.
Benefits for individuals
A clear understanding of personal purpose helps individuals:
- Gain greater self-awareness
- Find meaning in their work and goals
- Navigate challenges with resilience
- Make career decisions aligned with their values and passions
- Maintain stronger mental and emotional well-being
Most importantly, understanding purpose helps individuals build careers that feel meaningful and fulfilling.
Benefits for leaders
For leaders, understanding the motivations and aspirations of team members creates opportunities for more effective leadership.
When employees see how their personal goals connect to the organization’s mission, they become more engaged, committed, and motivated to contribute.
This often leads to:
- Higher performance
- Increased creativity and innovation
- Greater initiative and accountability
- Stronger collaboration
- A more positive and purpose-driven organizational culture

How can leaders discover purpose?
Discovering your own purpose
Leaders should take time to reflect on past experiences, meaningful projects, and memorable interactions.
Questions such as:
“What experiences have given me the greatest sense of fulfillment?”
or
“What situations consistently energize and motivate me?”
can help uncover recurring themes that reveal personal purpose.
Understanding the purpose of team members
Identifying the motivations of team members requires intentional conversations and active listening.
Leaders can gain valuable insights by:
- Holding regular one-on-one discussions
- Exploring employees’ career aspirations
- Understanding the reasons behind important decisions they have made
- Observing their interests, strengths, and behaviors in daily work
Even informal conversations can reveal meaningful insights about what truly motivates individuals.
How can individual purpose be aligned with organizational goals?
David highlighted three key leadership practices for aligning personal purpose with business objectives.
Design work around organizational purpose and individual passion
Leaders should clearly communicate the organization’s mission, strategic direction, and goals.
Team members need to understand:
- How their work contributes to organizational success
- Why their role matters
- What personal goals they can achieve through their contributions
This principle should not only be applied to major initiatives but also incorporated into everyday task assignments and performance discussions.
Recognition and appreciation for both individual and team achievements further strengthen this connection.
Create opportunities for growth and career development
Leaders can increase engagement by involving team members in decision-making processes and empowering them with greater ownership of their work.
Providing autonomy helps cultivate responsibility, accountability, and commitment to shared goals.
At the same time, performance should be monitored through measurable indicators that allow teams to understand their progress and identify areas for development.
Continuous learning opportunities, skill development programs, and constructive feedback help employees grow while supporting organizational objectives.
Foster a collaborative team environment
A purpose-driven culture thrives in an environment of open communication and collaboration.
Leaders should encourage honest dialogue and create opportunities for employees to reflect on their values, passions, and long-term aspirations.
When individuals understand themselves better and openly share their perspectives, teams become more connected, collaborative, and aligned around common goals.
