Ho Chi Minh City, December 17, 2023 – Vietnam Datathon 2023, a 24-hour Data Hackathon for university students in Vietnam, jointly organized by the University of Science, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), and Kyanon Digital, concluded successfully with numerous breakthrough technology solutions developed by the participants.

In this inaugural season of Vietnam Datathon, a total of VND 200 million in prizes and gifts was awarded to participating teams, including cash prizes, scholarships, and sponsored gifts.

Launched in October 2023, the competition attracted significant interest and active participation from students and professionals in the fields of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence:

– The top 24 teams coded continuously for 24 hours to develop Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) in the Grand Finale.

– 160 teams from prestigious universities across Vietnam participated in the competition.

– 30 Data Science and Artificial Intelligence experts serving as advisors, judges, and mentors, equipping teams with the foundational knowledge needed to ideate, develop Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), and present their solutions to the judging panel.

– 15 leading universities in Vietnam.

– 4 training sessions on Data Science and Artificial Intelligence conducted by experienced industry experts.

The Grand Finale was held at the University of Science, VNU-HCM. With the challenge of developing AI solutions for the retail industry, the top 24 teams spent 24 consecutive hours coding and developing technology solutions based on the ideas they proposed during the preliminary round. The resulting MVPs focused on retail solutions powered by Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The top five teams then presented their products and solutions before a judging panel consisting of researchers, business leaders, and leading experts in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

At the Vietnam Datathon 2023 Grand Finale, many innovative technology solutions were introduced, leveraging technologies such as Large Language Models (LLMs), classification models, recommendation systems, Generative AI, and more.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Minh Triet, Vice Rector of the University of Science, VNU-HCM, shared:

“Within 24 hours, participants worked together to develop solutions and persuade the judges of their value.

Data Science has tremendous potential in society. This competition encourages young people who are passionate about scientific research and technology development to discover innovative ideas and create solutions that can serve various industries and aspects of daily life.”

Vietnam Datathon 2023 provided a valuable and engaging platform for university students to learn, enhance their skills, and develop innovative solutions. At the same time, the competition demonstrated the tremendous potential of Vietnamese students in the fields of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, attracting strong interest from the technology community across Vietnam.

After listening to presentations from the top five teams, Mr. Dinh Cong Chinh, CIO of ACFC-VFBS, commented:

“I am delighted to see that today’s young generation is eager to learn, willing to adopt new technologies, and capable of connecting those technologies with real business challenges. From a retail business perspective, one of the industry’s biggest challenges is that we possess enormous amounts of data, but the question is how to transform that data into value that helps businesses generate more revenue and better understand their customers. This ultimately enables businesses to build stronger relationships with their customers. We need to learn how to use data effectively and meaningfully. To achieve that, we need intelligent, capable, ambitious, and passionate talent who can leverage both technology and data to create outstanding value for businesses.”

Speaking at the Vietnam Datathon 2023 Award Ceremony, Dr. Huynh Le Tan Tai, CEO of Kyanon Digital, Co-Head of the Organizing Committee, and Head Judge of the competition, stated:

“We would like to thank the universities, faculties, judges, sponsors, and partners who supported this competition. As Vietnam continues its journey toward becoming one of the world’s leading technology nations, the organizing committee hopes to make Vietnam Datathon an annual platform where Data Science enthusiasts can come together and build a strong community. However, becoming a leading technology nation requires a ready and capable workforce, as well as platforms that support continuous learning and professional development.”

The competition results were as follows:

First Prize (total value of VND 50 million): Team HKKTT from the University of Science, VNU-HCM, with their MVP solution Smart Interior Consultant, a solution combining two AI models: one image generation model and one object recognition and classification model.
